Setting the cutting parameters of the milling cutter

2025-09-01

1. End cutting of milling cutter:
In CNC milling of workpiece cavities such as molds, the cutter's extension needs to be increased when the cutting point is a concave portion or a deep cavity. Using a long-edge milling cutter can easily cause vibration and damage due to the tool's large deflection. Therefore, if only the cutting edge near the end of the tool is involved in the machining process, a short-edge, long-shank milling cutter with a longer overall length is recommended. When using a large-diameter milling cutter on a horizontal CNC machine tool, significant deformation due to the tool's own weight can occur, necessitating greater attention to the effects of end-edge cutting. In situations where a long-edge milling cutter is absolutely necessary, cutting and feed rates must be significantly reduced.

2. Selection of cutting parameters
The selection of cutting speed depends primarily on the workpiece material; the selection of feed rate depends primarily on the workpiece material and the diameter of the milling cutter. Some foreign tool manufacturers include cutting parameter selection tables in their tool catalogs for reference. However, the selection of cutting parameters is also influenced by many factors, including the machine tool, tool assembly, workpiece shape, and clamping method. Therefore, the cutting speed and feed rate should be adjusted appropriately based on the actual situation.
When tool life is the priority, the cutting speed and feed rate can be appropriately reduced; when the chip separation condition is not good, the cutting speed can be appropriately increased.
